Zone Read RPO

Combining pre-snap motion with zone read plays creates opportunities for the offense by slowing down the defense. The first thing that we need to see is that this is a formation built into the short side of the field allowing the offense a lot of running room to the field. The second thing is that the Z WR is on the ball covering the Y, this allows the X to be off the ball and come in motion.

The X motion accomplishes two things:

  1. It brings the corner with the X and
  2. Snapping the ball as the X is at the Tackle makes it so he blocks the mesh point from the LB’s vision — causing more hesitation defensively.

The F or second TE at the snap is coming back across the ball to make it look like split zone, however, he bypasses the end man on the line of scrimmage (EMOLS) and running an arrow route to the flat. This gives the QB a second option to run or throw the ball if he gets a pull read from the EMOLS which Louisville gets. In this case, the QBs second read, the FS, covers the F leaving the SS as the only person left to make the play on the QB.
