Army – Inside Veer

by Coach Jake Franklin

Army uses Inside Veer as a staple play in their offense, for it is a play that any triple-option team must have in their arsenal.

It is a play that attacks three gaps at once and there are two unblocked defenders that are being read. The initial read is the first Defensive Lineman from a 4i to Outside. The second read will be the next defender above or outside of the first read. This second read is typically a Line Backer.

If the Dive Key (First Read) freezes or runs upfield, the QB will hand it off to the Dive Player (FB). If the Dive Key attacks the FB, then the QB will pull it and get into pitch relationship with the Pitch Player (Slot-Back). The QB will then read the LB. The QB will either keep it himself or pitch the ball based on who the LB chooses to attack.
