Locker rooms all over the world are plastered with quotes emphasizing the power of preparation. Coaches watch endless hours of film, scouting reports are created, game plans are installed and the real work is all completed before the lights come on and the whistle blows. Quizzing players is not new. Five-time Super Bowl Champion Coach Bill Belichick, has long been known to value player quizzing as a key to having one of the best prepared teams in the NFL week-in and week-out. Belichick uses quizzing as a way to stress the importance of knowing the opponent and the gameplan inside and out.
Another benefit of player quizzing is to know what they know AND what they don’t. Wouldn’t you want to know if your team fully understands how you will be defending the low post before the game and not after giving up back to back layups? By quizzing players, coaches can use the data results to direct what information needs to be readdressed or what tactics need to be covered again in practice or shoot around.
