Abbrev. Statistic Definition
2P% 2-Point Field Goal Percentage The percentage of 2-point field goals that a player or team makes.

 

Formula: 2PM/2PA

2PA 2-Point Field Goals Attempted The number of 2-point field goals that a team or player attempts.
2PM 2-Point Field Goals Made The number of 2-point field goals that a team or player makes.
3P% 3-Point Field Goal Percentage The percentage of 3-point field goals that a team or player makes.

 

Formula: 3PM/3PA

3PA 3-Point Field Goals Attempted The number of 3-point field goals that a team or player attempts.
3PM 3-Point Field Goals Made The number of 3-point field goals that a team or player makes.
3FREQ 3-Point Frequency The percentage of a team’s or player’s shots that are 3-point attempts.

 

Formula: 3PA/FGA

A/TO Assist/Turnover Ratio The number of assists for a team or player compared to the number of turnovers committed.

 

Formula: AST/TO

AST Assists The number of passes that lead directly to a made basket by a team or player.
BP Bench Points The number of points contributed by players who come off the bench (non-starters) during a game.
BLK Blocked Shots The number of blocks – a shot that is touched or deflected by a defensive player that alters the trajectory of the shot attempt – by a team or player.
DEF EFF Defensive Efficiency The measure of a team’s defensive ability to prevent their opponents from scoring by calculating the number of points a team gives up per 100 possessions.

 

Formula: (Opp. PTS/POSS) x 100

DEF FTR Defensive Free Throw Rate The measure of how often a team allows their opponents to get to the foul line. It is the number of free throw attempts compared to the number of field goal attempts.

 

Formula: Opp. FTA/Opp. FGA

DREB Defensive Rebounds The number of rebounds a team or player collects while on defense.
DREB% Defensive Rebound Percentage The percentage of available  rebounds that a team secures while on defense.

 

Formula: DREB / (DREB + OPP OREB)

DEF TO% Defensive Turnover Percentage The percentage of possessions that result in a turnover while a team is on defense.

 

Formula: Opp. TO / Opp. POSS

EFG% Effective Field Goal Percentage A shooting statistic that adjusts for the fact that a 3-point field goal is worth one more point than a 2-point field goal. For example, if Player A is 4/10 with two 3-pointers and Player B is 5/10 with zero 3-pointers, both players would have the same number of points (10). Thus, both players’ EFG% equals 50%.

 

Formula: FGM + (0.5 x 3PM) / FGA

EFF +/- Efficiency Margin Also known as Net Efficiency, the difference between a team’s offensive and defensive efficiency.

 

Formula: OFF EFF – DEF EFF

FB PTS Fast Break Points The number of points scored by a team or player while on fast breaks.
FG% Field Goal Percentage The percentage of field goals that a team or player makes.

 

Formula: FGM / FGA

FGA Field Goals Attempted The number of field goals that a team or player attempts.
FGM Field Goals Made The number of field goals that a team or player makes.
FT% Free Throw Percentage The percentage of free thow attempts that a team or player makes.

 

Formula: FTM / FTA

FTA Free Throws Attempted The number of free throws that a team or player attempts.
FTM Free Throws Made The number of free throws that a team or player makes.
GP Games Played The number of games that a team or player has played.
GS Games Started The number of games that a player has been in the starting lineup.
MIN Minutes The number of minutes that a player or team has played in a game or collection of games.
OFF AST% Offensive Assist Percentage The percentage of made field goals by a team as a result from an assist – a pass that leads directly to a made basket.

OFF EFF Offensive Efficiency The measure of a team’s offensive ability to score by calculating the number of points a team accumulates per 100 possessions.

 

Formula: (PTS/POSS) x 100

OFF FTR Offensive Free Throw Rate The measure of how often a team gets to the foul line. It is the number of free throw attempts compared to the number of field goal attempts.

 

Formula: FTA/FGA

OREB Offensive Rebounds The number of rebounds a team or player collects while on offense.
OREB% Offensive Rebound Percentage The percentage of available  rebounds that a team secures while on offense.

 

Formula: OREB / (OREB + OPP DREB)

OFF TO% Offensive Turnover Percentage The percentage of possessions that result in a turnover while a team is on offense.

 

Formula: TO / POSS

PACE Pace The number of possessions for a team per 40 minutes (48 for NBA).
PF Personal Fouls The number of fouls a team or player has committed.
PTS Points The number of points a team or player has scored.
PITP Points in the Paint The number of points a team or player has scored on shots taken in the paint area.
PTS OFF TO Points Off Turnovers The number of points scored by a team following an opponent possession that results in a turnover.
PTS/POSS Points Per Possession The number of points a team scores per possession.

 

Formula: PTS / POSS

POSS Possessions The number of possessions – a sequence by the offense ending in a made field goal, made free throw, turnover, or defensive rebound – played by a team. Note: an offensive rebound does not create a new possession, it simply extends the current possession.
REB +/- Rebound Margin The difference between a team’s total rebounds and their opponent’s total rebounds.

 

Formula: REB – Opp. REB

REB% Rebound Percentage The percentage of available rebounds that a team secures.

 

Formula: REB / REB + Opp. REB

REB Rebounds The number of times a team or player recovers the ball after a missed shot attempt.
REB Rebounds (Team) The number of times a team gains possession of the ball after a missed shot that does not secured by an inbound player.
PTS +/- Scoring Margin The point differential between a team and their opponent when a team, lineup, or player is on the floor.

 

Formula: PTS (Team) – PTS (Opp.)

2ND PTS Second Chance Points The number of points that a team scores after they have attempted at least one shot during the same possession.
STL Steals The number of times a team or player legally takes the ball away from an opponent, intercepts a pass, or otherwise gains possession following an opponent turnover (provided the ball remains in bounds and the clock has not stopped).
TS% True Shooting Percentage A shooting percentage that factors in the value of 3-point field goals and free throws in addition to the total number of field goal attempts.

 

Formula: PTS / 2 x (FGA + (0.44 x FTA))

TO Turnovers The number of times a team or player loses possession of the ball without attempting a field goal or free throw (except at the end of a period).
